How To Sew A Ruffled Onesie

How to Sew a Ruffled Onesie
I love how cute these are,  They make nice summer outfits when it is so hot, all you put on your baby is onesie any way.  Also they make wonderful gifts.

1:   First you need a onesie. Sewing sheers, pins, ruler, marking pen, and fabric of your choice. (optional: fusible interfacing for the inner side of the onesie to stabilise the material as you sew.  I recommend this.)
2:   Cut 3 strips of fabric 3 to 4 inches wide.  (I like to use 3'' strips for onesies 12 months and under.  4'' strips for onesies over 12 months.)  The length should be doubled the back with of the onesie. You can add more length for more ruffle.

3:    Next you must finish the edges of your strips of fabric. I don't have a serger so I use an overcasting stitch and sew around three sides leaving the top length open.  (That is the side you pin and sew to the onesie.)

4:    Now you must mark where you want to sew the ruffles on the back of your onesie.  I start at the bottom of the onesie, do not sew your ruffle to the tab that wraps under the baby's bottom.  With a straight edge draw a straight line across the back of the onesie. Measure 1 inch up from the line you just drew and mark another line. Repeat one more time.
5:   With your strip of fabric right side down, line your strip of fabric with the top line and first pin the outer corners to the onesie.

                                                           Then pin the middle down.
Continue pining the fabric almost like pleats all the way across the onesie.
6:   Start sewing.  Removing the pins as you go. Hold down the folds of the fabric as the fabric goes under the foot.
7:     Next sew a zigzag stitch to prevent raveling.

Go on to your next ruffle. (You can make a ruffle by smocking the fabric. There are directions for that in most sewing machine manuals.  I find it hard to pin and sew such small ruffles that way)
Repeat steps 5 threw 7 two more times.
Thanks I hope this is clear to read and understand.

  1. This is adorable. I have an embroidery machine and plan to do an applique on the front to match the ruffle.
